The Sabbath

Genesis 2:1-4

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens

Why did God need to rest after creating the world in six days?  He does not get tired as Isaiah 40:28 states:  "Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding" (KJV).  He set apart the seventh day not because he was tired but because his creation was finished and because he was happy with what he had made.  Think about God sitting in a lounge chair, looking at the world and universe, smiling to himself in satisfaction, being pleased in what he had created.

If you go back to the other days of creation, it mentions there was evening and morning on each of these days.  On the seventh day of creation, no evening and morning are mentioned.  This seventh day of rest may have been intended to have no end to it.  However, this rest would be interrupted later on with an unfortunate incidence in the Garden of Eden.  Does this ever happen to you?  You walk in the house after a strenous day at work?  You sit down in your favorite chair, wanting to relax either reading a book or listening to music.  As soon as you sit down, the phone rings.  You get up and are annoyed that it is either is a wrong number or somebody trying to sell you their latest product?  Your rest has been interrupted.  Imagine how God thought when his rest became interrupted.

Genesis 3:8-9

8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.

9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?

John 5:9  9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

John 5:17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

Are you looking around you and admiring God's creation?  Do not let the regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow stop you from enjoying today.  There are many times when I think back to things I could have done differently.  When I do this, I concentrate on being angry because of wrong choices I made.  What point is it to look back and be angry at something I cannot change?  It would be nice if I had a time machine so I could go back and make different and wiaser choices.  Unfortunately, time machines have not been invented yet.  So the only thing I can do is say "The past is the past, I just have to learn from my mistakes and moveforward."  There are times when I worry about the future.  Why should I do that, since it isn't here yet?  While it might be good to plan ahead, it is best not to worry about things.  If I do this, I will not be able to enjoy today.
