The First Marriage

Genesis 2:18  "And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him" (KJV).

It was not good, when God saw that Adam was without a mate.  He was alone.  Well, in a way that could have been good.  Without another human, he had God all to himself.  He had his fellowship with his creator, the beauty of the garden that he could look at day in and day out, all the delicious fruit he could eat, all the animals that he could call pets, and so much more.  Why would he need another human in this paradise?  Imagine if you are in a similar scenario where you find the most beautiful paradise on earth.  Maybe you might want to keep it all to yourself if you are selfish.  However, in most cases, you want to share it with people you know.  That is the same with a new Christian.  They discover the beauty of a loving and forgiving God.  They want to share this with their loved ones and even strangers.  God created Eve as a helper since the animals, while they were mostly used in tilling the earth, were not suitable helpers as Genesis 2:18 states:

"And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him" (KJV).

He created Eve, the first woman and gave her to Adam as a gift Genesis 3:12 states:

"And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat" (KJV).

Not only did Adam have a helper, companion and wife, he had a fellow human who he could share God's creation with.  Adam did not realize that he needed Eve,  God knew this even before he made her.  He knew that the animals would not take care of his needs.  He may have even wondered why he did not have a mate when he noticed that the animals each had one,

Woman are not to be looked down as unequal to man because when he created her, he also created her in His image.  There is only one thing different from her creation.  Where Adam was created from dust, Eve was created from Adam’s rib.

Genesis 2:23 "And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man" (KJV).

With God's creation of this world and of man, we see many firsts,  The garden of Eden was the first home for plant life, birds, fish, reptiles, insects, animals and man.  Adam was the first worker.  While God provided the mist to water the plants, his purpose of creating Adam was so the human could till the earth and grown and harvest food.  While God could have done all this, he created man so he would e useful in God's creation, using the gifts that God gave him.  God created Adam not so he would be a servant to the lord but created him so man and God could work together.  Now, as Christians, how should we view work?  Is it a pain in the neck to get up each morning?  Do you wish you did not have to work?  Wouldn't it be awesome to have the entire week so you can dedicate time to the Lord and his personal assignments that he gives you?

A majority has to work to bring home the paycheck and pay bills.  However, we should view work in a positive way.  Take a look at the following verses:

James 2:26 "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also" (KJV).

1 Corinthian 3:9 "For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building"

When we get a job we develop skills, abilities and talents which we can use to cooperate with God and be faithful to him.  Even if you did not have to work, it takes work to learn how to be like Jesus.  We are each different from one another and we must learn what God want us to do during our daily walk with him.  You want to be able to say as John said in John 17.

Genesis 2:8 "And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed" (KJV).

Take a look at all the homes and apartments in your neighborhood, village, city or town.  They are filled with tenants and residents.  Many people call these places a home.  Adam had a home in the garden of Eden and he was the first human resident.  Think about the most beautiful garden you have ever seen or visited.  Adam's garden was a tropical garden created by God's hand.  There are no words to describe the beauty of this place.  It was created for humans to enjoy and also to have plentiful food.

Genesis 2:16-17

16 "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat" (KJV):

17 "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (KJV).

God created Adam so he could enjoy life in the tropical paradise.  However, he also gave him responsibilities as well.  All of God's commands are good and when people obey them, they will be bless with good things.  Also when men obey God, it will keep them in fellowship with him and gain his approval.

Psalms 33:11  "The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generation" (KJV)

Psalm 119:39  "Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good" (KJV).

Proverbs 6:20-23

20 My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

21 Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.

22 When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.

23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life (KJV).

1 John 5:3 "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous" (KJV).

Imagine Adam’s surprise when he opened his eyes and saw Eve.  He burst into praise as said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man” (Genesis 2:23, KJV).  He called her woman since she was formed out of man.  She was made both from his and for him.  He needed her since she would also need him.  They were created so they would belong together and serve each other.  In marriage they would be one flesh.  This gift to Adam was a loving gift from God.

Ephesians 5:30-31
30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.
31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

There was no sin or evil in the Gardenof Eden,  Therefore, Adam and Eve were like little children who are innocent.  God had planted two trees in the Garden of Eden, the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  After sinning by eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, which God commanded them not to, they lost their innocence and eventually died.  Why would God test these two humans like that?  God gave them the freedom of choice and did not want them to live like robots.  He wanted them to obey and love him willingly and freely.

Romans 7:1-3

1.  Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.
3 So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.

1 Corinthians 7:8-9

8 I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I.
9 But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn.

1 Timothy 5:14 “ I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully” (KJV)
