Is There More Than One God?

Genesis 35: 2, 4

2.  Then Jacob said unto his household and to all that were with him, put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

4.  And he gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hands, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem (KJV).

Ever since man started to inhabit the earth, the people worshiped gods.  While the original occupants of the world-Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel and Seth worshiped the True Lord God, as the generations grew, individuals branched off to their own gods.  While we are to worship only the God who created this world and the universe, is he the only God or are there others?
Throughout Biblical history, many people living during those times worshiped other gods and goddesses.  However, since the beginning of this world, the God who created this world is the only true God and has no other gods to compete with.  So what were these gods that other people worship?  They were things such as stone statues, rocks, golden calves and so on.  And what did these things do?       Absolutely nothing!  Take any item you use around the house.  For example, you have a phone which has become an idol.   Do you treat it like a god?  Do you worship it and pray to it?  What does it do, besides presenting you with a cool app?  Do it answer your prayers?  Does it lead you through life?  While you might think so, especially with “Google Me Now”, all this phone is good for is wasting your time and life and having to charge it when its battery runs down.  You might as well say that your phone depends on you to keep it running.   Whatever the idol whether it is your phone, a book series, a television show and so on, if it takes you away from God, it is a god that you are replacing with the One and True God.

Exodus 20:3-"Thou shalt have no other gods before me" KJV).

Deuteronomy 6:4-"Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" (KJV).

1 Kings 8:60-"That all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else" (KJV).

The God is Lord and the one true God.  Even though he is not competing with other gods, he still is a jealous God and does not want us to worship these other lesser gods.  When we fall into the trap of following other false gods, we will be walking away from the life that the true God wants us to lead.  By following other gods, we may lead a life of evil wickedness.  For example, later on in the Bible examples are shown of what happens when an individual does this.  One such example is described when fathers sacrificed their own children.  These individuals were misled and did evil in the eyes of God.  Even today people are doing just that.  It does not have to be a god that they are worshipping in general speaking.  However, when individuals are addicted to television shows such as The Walking Dead and Orange is the New Black, they are focusing on those shows and not focusing on what is important-having a spiritual walk with God.
